Storing your items in a self-storage unit can help to declutter your home, but you'll want to take a few steps to ensure your items are safe from any potential damage while they are stored away. Use this guide to keep your items in great condition inside your self-storage unit.

Wrap Your Items

Dirt, dust, and debris can settle on your items over time, so consider wrapping your items to protect them. Furniture can be wrapped in plastic tarps, or you can purchase rolls of plastic sheeting from your local hardware store. Place books in plastic bags before placing them in boxes to provide an added layer of protection against moisture and mildew. You may also want to consider placing clothing in individual plastic-zipper bags to keep them protected from moisture. Place plastic tarps over shelving units to shield them from dust and dirt.

Keep Items Off of the Floor

Avoid placing items directly on the floor as much as possible. This will prevent them from becoming damaged by accidental flooding and help to keep pests away. You can use wooden pallets to keep furniture off of the floor to keep them safe. For adjustable shelving units, try to keep the bottom shelf as far from the floor as possible. You may also want to line the floor with cardboard boxes, which can absorb water in the event of a flood.

Wrap Furniture in Bubble Wrap

If you are storing furniture, consider using bubble wrap to provide a bit of extra protection from damage. You can use the wrap around legs and joints for added reinforcement and place a layer on top of table surfaces to prevent scratches and dings. For sofas or chairs, consider wrapping cushions individually in plastic wrap to keep them protected from moisture and dirt.

Inspect Your Storage Unit

Be sure to visit your self-storage unit from time to time. You can take this opportunity to dust and polish furniture, check items for signs of damage, and do any other tidying that might be necessary. Sweep the floors and look for any signs of an insect or rodent infestation, and be sure to let your storage facility's management know if you see signs of a problem. If your unit is temperature controlled, check the thermostat to ensure your space is at the ideal temperature for your items.

Keeping your self-storage unit tidy and organized can go a long way toward keeping your items safe. Use this guide to help secure your self-storage unit items, and ask your facility's management for any other ideas you can use.
